COAR PASCO

A Review on School History

Insites into our beginnings
By Ivan Campos Quispe ivancamposuispe@gmail.com

A little after celebrating the graduation ceremony for the class of 2017, we had a talk with our principal, Mrs. Karen G. Araujo Gomero, about the initial days of COAR-Pasco to find out details of those early days.

IC: What was the beginning of the Coar-Pasco like?
KA: First of all, good morning and welcome. Coar Pasco started in 2015 with the 99 students that registered that year. It was a grate- ful and beautiful experience. None- theless, it was a new experience not only for me, but also for all the crew that began this work, and for the students who came because they would get to be a part of this new proposal of educative model in a form of residence. At the begin- ning we had 12 teachers who worked for the third grade, but we also had the administrative and BYDE team. In total there were 33 personnel.

IC: What diflculties did you face in the beginning?
KA: From the beginning, it was the adaption to a residential model. It was located in Oxapampa city, the residence was in a hotel, so students had to commute from the school to the residence to have lunch, and in the evening, so it took two hours just for moving from residence to school and viceversa.

IC: And in the academic side?
KA: Students came from EBR schools, and had to adapt to the new proposal of IB program with a educative proposal which was diuerent, it implied a change in
attitude and will of the stau and students. It was demanding, we worked 48 hours a week as we do now. We had to put our family in second place.

IC: What was the most diflcult moment you had to face as a principal, so far?
KA: Diuerent situations, but I think we always have problems with lack of infrastructure, the hardest problem was not having the residence on time, during the years of 2015 the government of Pasco provided the resources to stay in the residence in Oxapampa through an agreement. By March of 2016, we still didn´t have a residence and we couldn´t start clases. Then, we started classes on 16th of April 2016 because they couldn´t conclude building the residence on time.

IC: What anecdote do you remember?
KA: One that I remember is the visit of the President of the World Bank, also we had the visit of the President of Peru and the Education Minister. What is curious about this experience is that because this district is small no authority would have come here. I´ll never forget the speech of the mayor of Chontabamba when he said that suddenly we have visitors from around the world. The day the President of the World Bank came it rained four times, it was sunny too, for a moment they said that he wouldn´t come and then they said they would come, but eventually a helicopter arrived here and we could see him coming in our school, and his visit was transmitted on TV in all Peru.

IC: What challenges does COAR Pasco have in the short and medium term?
KA: Our biggest challenge is to get the certification of IB Program for the fifth grade students, of 88 students, 80 will take the exam, we hope that at least 90% of them pass the test. Also, our goal in the medium term is to improve the quality of the residence halls with an investment of around S/. 200
000. Additionally, we hope to have the definite infrastructure because nowadays we are using a provisio- nal residence and school

IC: Students from diuerent parts of Peru come to COAR-Pasco, why is it important?
KA: The aim of all the COARs is to promote interculturality, which means to know, to understand, and to respect cultural diuerences, and the students see that their country is not only the region where they come from, but also it is rich and multicultural which we have to value.

For its abundant flora and fauna, Oxapampa is considered one of the cleanest cities in our country, besides being a natural site for Peru.

What tourist attractions can I find in Oxapampa?
Food, waterfalls, animals, native communities and customs is what you can find in this city; in addition to a cordial treatment on the part of its inhabitants. A great example of this is the Yánesha native community, which has a craft workshop where they work with pieces of wood, seeds (huayruros, cow eyes and others), vegetable fibers, mud, bird feathers (macaws, parrots and others) and natural dyes They also sell them to the public and offer guided tours to tourists.

A little about its natural reserve:
The "Yanachaga Chemillén National Park" is a protected area of 122 thousand hectares covering the districts of Oxapampa, Huancabamba, Pozuzo, Villa Rica and Palcazú. The park is located on the eastern slope of the Peruvian Andes, known for hosting a great biodiversity, which includes many endangered species, making it one of the most important natural parks in Peru.

“SELVÁMONOS”
Oxapampa is an important livestock and coffee center,
and for ten years it has been the epicenter of music and culture thanks to the Selvámonos festival, which takes place every year at the end of June. In this celebration, more than 20 international musical groups, such as Little Jesus, Sea Wolves (CHL), Iseo & Dodosound with The Mousehunters (ESP), Nano Stern (CHL), The Inspector Cluzo (FR), Kebra Ethiopia (ZAF), as well as the bands Naval Novalima, Bareto, Miki Gonzalez, La Mente, Hit the Rose, among others, come to Oxapampa to appear on June 29 and 30.

WHY READ TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD?
To kill a Mockingbird is a novel by Harper Lee, published in 1960. A hugely popular novel, it was translated into some 40 languages and sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, and won a Pulitzer Prize in 1961. The novel has been widely praised for its delicate treatment of children. Touching the theme of the awakening of racism and prejudice in the American South, on the other hand To Killing a Mockingbird takes readers to the roots of human behavior: innocence and experience, kindness and cruelty, love and hate, in the same mode humor.
The characters who perform in the essence of the varied work, we shrink from infants to old people, from rich to poor, from black to white; as protagonist we have Scout, who along with his brother Jem and his inseparable friend Dill, try to discover all the mysteries that hide the city of Maycomb, and therefore run into racial prejudices, that having no knowledge about this, It will be a great journey
The plot of this novel begins when Scout, his brother Jem and his friend Dill generate a lot of intrigue rumors of the people about a man named Boo Radley, who lives in the neighborhood, but never leaves his home. Legend has it that he once stabbed his father in the leg with scissors, and described him as almost a monster. Dill is from Mississippi but spends his summer in Maycomb, in a house near the Finch. And it's since then that the plot begins, After trying to find out about Boo Radley begin a journey where we can find the problem of racism towards Tom Robinson and Mayella Ewell
The book to kill a mockingbird affected me a lot because it brought us intrigue and at the same time we learned a lot about the problems of racism and social stereotypes, which had great effects and therefore brought intrigue; especially Boo Radley, who is a character who does not appear much at the beginning of the story, and therefore ambiguous to some extent.
There were special moments like negative events, for example, the fire that takes place in the house of Miss Maudie and this is a moment in which we realize the great participation of Boo Radley in protecting Scout. And, finally, the book has a very high relation with respect to the conjuncture of that moment, since it was lived in a macho era and with racial prejudices
In conclusion, I would recommend To kill a Mockingbird, because it is a work that represents a great social problem that was lived in that reality: racism; showing us realistically and thoroughly, the insults that blacks had to go through in the city of Maycomb, I would recommend this work because it makes you aware of the situation of people with dark complexions, and makes you understand that we are all equal, since Like a nightingale, killing this animal without harming anyone is a tremendous stupidity.
